Psychology ServicesSometimes it can be difficult to think about you or your loved ones having a diagnosis of cancer. Some people find it helpful to talk to and share their feelings with others who have had similar experiences. Other people find it helpful to have an open discussion with their loved ones. The staff in the Psychology department will be able to help you. Jump to section: Group ProgramsGroup Therapy for Spouse or Significant OtherThis program is offered to husbands, wives or significant others of cancer patients. Participants will have the opportunity to share their feelings and experiences, and learn different coping skills including the importance of taking care of oneself in order to optimize the care of the sick spouse. Group Therapy for CouplesThis program is offered to couples when one of the spouses has cancer. Participants in this group will have the opportunity to increase communication, facilitate the expression of feelings, help participants develop coping skills to deal effectively with their fears, anger, frustration and anxiety, and enhance the couple's mutual support and care. Group Therapy for Brain Tumor PatientsThis program is offered to patients and their caregivers or significant others. Participants are encouraged to communicate and facilitate the expression of their feelings. Participants are presented with different strategies to assist them in coping with the limitations and fears that often accompany a diagnosis of a brain tumor. This is a guided and non- structured discussion and presentation on various topics such a s denial, fear, anger/frustration, depression, impending loss and coping with personal and life issues. Mind-Body ProgramsThe Arts in Medicine ProgramThis program features a series of workshops in which cancer patients and their family members have opportunity and support to explore new ways of personal creative expression. Programs offered are: Choir, Journalling with Threads, Fibre Arts, PHotography, Watercolour Painting, Acrylic Painting, Sketching, Journalling, Sculpting, and more. Pre-registration is required. Look Good... Feel Better ProgramThis program is offered free of charge through the Canadian Toiletry & Fragrance Association Foundation and the Department of Psychology. This is a special program to help women with cancer enhance their appearance and self-esteem. Certified, volunteer cosmetologists will show you how to manage appearance changes from cancer therapy. Stress Mangement and Relaxation TrainingThis program is offered to inpatients, outpatients and family members. Participants will be instructed in and explore various stress reduction and relaxation techniques. Pre-registration is required.
