Bone Imaging Patient Information (CCI)PurposeTo demonstrate areas of increased or decreased bone concentration of the radioactive tracer caused by infection, injury, tumor or vascular disorders. PreparationNone. Female patients with a breast prostheses will be asked to remove them before imaging. DietNo restrictions. Procedure ExplainationUpon arrival to the department, you will be given an injection of a radioactive material in an arm vein. You are then free to leave the department for approximately 2 hours. The technologist will give you a time to return for the bone scan. When you return to the department, you will be asked to empty your bladder as well as remove any metal objects such as keys and jewelry. Imaging will take approximately 30 minutes and is usually performed with you lying on your back on the imaging table. Special ConsiderationsYou will be asked to drink 5 glasses of fluid (8 ounces/or 250 mL each) between the injection and the time you return for imaging. This can be any type of fluid; i.e. water, tea, juice, clear soup, etc. You are free to eat and take any medications you may be on during the 2 hour delay time. As well, you should empty your bladder as often as possible during this time. Side EffectsReactions to the imaging tracer are rare. Questions or Concerns?Please call (780) 432-8786.
