FDG PET Imaging (CCI)

Purpose

To demonstrate areas of increased glucose metabolism. PET can be used to distinguish malignant versus benign tumors and to evaluate treatment effectiveness.

Preparation

Patients will be asked to fast for 6 hours prior to their PET appointment. Only water is allowed during the fasting period. If you are a diabetic please contact us for further information.

Procedure Explanation

Upon arrival to the department, you will be given a mild sedative pill to relax you. You will be given an injection of a radioactive sugar solution in an arm vein and asked to rest very quietly for 45 minutes. Following the rest period you will be asked to empty your bladder. The PET scan will take 45 - 60 minutes. Please allow 21/2 - 3 hours for the entire procedure.

Special Considerations

The sedative may make you drowsy so you should make arrangements to be driven home following the PET scan.

Side Effects

None.
