Diagnostic Ultrasound Patient Information

Abdominal Ultrasound

This includes the area of the abdomen above the umbilicus (belly button), such as liver, pancreas, kidneys, spleen, aorta, gallbladder and adrenals.

Preparation

Fasting for 12 hours prior to the examination. Do not eat or drink until after the examination. For gallbladder (biliary system) examination, you must have a FAT FREE MEAL (no fried foods, butter, margarine, oil or fatty foods) the evening prior to the examination in addition to fasting for 12 hours. (NOTE: If you are taking any medications, you may do so with some water only). No carbonated drinks like gingerale, pop, or gum chewing. IF DIABETIC, request earliest possible appointment time during the day.

Pelvic Ultrasound

This includes areas below the umbilicus (belly button). YOU MUST HAVE A FULL URINARY BLADDER.

Preparation

2 hours prior to the exam, you must drink 3-4 glasses (8 oz.) of water. You may eat or drink other liquids on top of the required amount of water. No carbonated drinks, i.e. pop. Note: When Abdominal and Pelvic ultrasounds are booked ON THE SAME DAY, you may drink water only (3-4, 8 oz. glasses) 1 to 2 hrs. before your ultrasound examination. DO NOT VOID - YOU MUST HAVE A FULL BLADDER. This will allow the Abdominal and Pelvic ultrasounds to be done at the same time, reducing your waiting time.

Transrectal Ultrasound (prostate)

This includes the area within the last portion of the large bowel (colon), approximately 3 inches (7.5 cm) inside the rectal opening (anus). In order for the technician to insert the ultrasound probe you must lie on your left side for the examination.

Preparation

No special diet is required. You will be given a Fleet enema 15-30 minutes before your examination to clean the end portion of your large bowel (rectum). A gel will be used on the end of the ultrasound probe so it can be easily inserted into the rectum.

NO PREPARATION REQUIRED FOR: Heart (echocardiogram), Thyroid/ Parathyroid Studies, Breast, Testicle or eyes.
