Neutropenia LetterThis patient is receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer. There is a significant risk of neutropenia, which may be complicated by sepsis. If thre is any suspicion of an infection including a temperature greater or equal to 38.5°C or three consecutive temperatures of 38.3°C, complete blood counts (CBC and differential) and blood cultures should be performed. In the event of fever greater or equal to 38.5°C associated with neutropenia (absolute neutrophil count less than or equal to 0.5 x 109/L or white blood cell count less than or equal to 1.0 x 109/l) this is a medical emergency. This patient should be treated with hospitalization and intravenous antibiotics such as ceftazidime 2 grams IV Q8H. Alberta Breast Cancer Program Physicians |
